Review Methodology

This page explains exactly how we evaluate and rank ladders.

Criteria we weigh

  1. Ladder type fit to the job. Step, extension, multi-position, telescoping, platform, step stool, attic, or specialty. Wrong type = unsafe.
  2. Duty rating. Type IAA (375 lb), IA (300 lb), I (250 lb), II (225 lb), III (200 lb). Our recommendation always exceeds user + tools + materials, with a comfortable margin.
  3. Working reach. Computed using manufacturer reach charts and a user reach of approximately 4 ft for step ladders. Extension ladders are evaluated at the 4-to-1 setup angle.
  4. Material. Fiberglass for any electrical exposure or work near power lines; aluminum for everything else where weight matters.
  5. Build quality. Rung fit, lock behavior, foot grip, label legibility, warranty length.
  6. Storage and portability. Folded footprint, weight, carry handles.
  7. Accessory compatibility. Stabilizers, levelers, standoffs, hooks, paint trays.

How we test

For featured ladders, we measure folded size and weight, confirm advertised reach against a tape, load-test the rated capacity at the ladder’s prescribed angle, and inspect feet, rungs, locks, hinges, ropes, and labels. We don’t publish a recommendation we wouldn’t climb ourselves.

Our calculators

The reach calculator, duty rating calculator, ladder match quiz, and placement visualizer output estimates. They’re meant to point you at the right category — not to override your manufacturer’s instructions.

When we update a recommendation

Guides are reviewed at least annually, plus whenever a recall, safety alert, or significant product change lands. The “Last reviewed” date at the top of every page tells you when the page was last touched.
